Top 7 flowering plants for winters

Winters are the best time for the flowers in India in terms of number of gloom's and varieties. choosing right plants will not only fill your terrace/garden with multiple colors but also additionally bring bees and butterflies to them.

In below blog i will try to list combination of plants which are pleasing to eyes and the ones which also attracts pollinators.

Winter flowering plants (Nov-Feb)

1.Marigold.

Types :

     Marigold now a days comes in two varieties

        1) Hybrid marigold - Most of the city people fall for hybrid marigold, because of below reasons
            1) Short in height
            2)Start flowering early
            3)Flower come in  bunches

However i would suggest to go for desi marigold , you may need to search a little bit, but its worth to be searched because of below reasons

        1) Strong fragnance
        2) Liked by bees a lot , and randomly some butterflies also find nectar in them
        3) Strong build , can have 15-20 flowers blooming at time

Care : 
    1) Extremely sensitive to temperature rise, it needs water regularly in late winter

Advantage :
  1) Many , few are already mentioned above


2.Verbena :

Verbena is a plant which keeps you amaze with the bright colors it comes in, it start flowering in winter till late springs .

     1) Its a hardy plant , all it need a good pot with depth and space to expand itself.


3.Miniature Roses

 Roses are considered as king of flowers , a lot of poems and songs are written about them , and they surely bring delight to your eyes .

Care :

    1) Roses prefer dry soil, so don't over water them
    2) Miniature white  roses  gives flower in abundance, i had 16 bloomed flowers in the same pot at one time.

Advice :
    1) Most of the roses now a days are show peace only , so even if you planting 5 types of roses just include one native rose\desi gulab as well

Advantage of desi gulab :

   1) Strong fragnance , bees attract on them
   2) Hardy plants
   3) blooms all over the years.

4.Mirchi gudhal or sleeping hibiscus :

Mirchi gudhal is plant which comes to your rescue when you mummy needed one flower each day for prayer and you dont want her to pluck marigold or roses or any other flower.


Care :

    1) Hardy plants

Advantage:

    2) blooms in abundance



5.guldawri pant or Chrysanthemum :
Guldawri blooms in abundance and have wide range of colors

Care :

     1)Water them when the soil is dry

Advantage :

     1)Flower remains for many days

     2)Comes in wide range of colors

 Advice :

try to pick guldawri plant from nursery when it is yet to be bloomed .Already Bloomed plant does not bloom for many days when braught at home.

6. Lantana camara:
Lantana camara comes from shrub family , and when it comes to attracting butterflies , this shrub has no match, it comes in wide range of colors

    1) Hardy plant , water only when the soil becomes dry

Advantage :
   1) Source of nectar for butterflies


7.Begonia :

its a perennial , comes in wide range of colors , ignore the butterfly in pic , she does not like begonia much ;)

1) watering  twice a week will be fine

Advantage :
1) Long lasting flowers
2)does not require much care

Just to mention that all the above flowers prefer direct sunlight at least for couple of hours .

Butterfly of month June : Eurema Hecabe

Delhi has lots of different varieties of butterflies, there are more then 69 species recorded in Delhi-NCR. My efforts are how can we include these beautiful creatures in our urban lifestyle and environment. If you have some space to grow plants , and   want to see butterflies  over them , this blog could give you a head start. The first serious thoughts about butterflies came around a year ago, when  i realized, that i have stopped seeing them too often, its like something which was very common in your life and you only started noticing it when it is gone!!
