Honestly , I am trying to create a butterfly garden , Last one year of my times spent on studying about their plants choices , food , behavior. You can have a look on my efforts for butterfly garden Here.
As the greenery increased over my terrace , I begin to see many visitors , who graced my garden with their surprise presence.
Few of them, named to be are sparrows,main-ah, bulbul and very beautiful humming birds .
Story of humming birds visiting the garden is quite interesting , I was planting host plant for butterflies from hibiscus species . i.e.
1) Sleeping hibiscus or mirchi gudhal
2)Hybrid hibiscus
3)Native hibiscus
During the first year , only the sleeping hibiscus bloomed , the rest two hibiscus varieties were still in development phase .No butterflies or birds visited them. This year i can see all the hibiscus having flowers and buds.
I thought to have some more flowers which can bloom in harsh summer also provide some green foliage to increase the green cover.
so i chooses
1) Trumpet Vine
2)Tekoma stans
I clubbed all these plants together in tight space, so that they don't look scattered and birds can easily sit on them.
Trumpet vines are known to attract humming birds , so once they saw the bloom of trumpet vine, they start coming to the cluster of plants , to my surprise they start drawing nectar from sleeping hibiscus and hybrid hibiscus as well , and although they may came because of trumpet vine , but Hibiscus seems to be one of their favorite plant.
Tekoma stans yellow flower helped them to have another good source of nectar.
Here is a short video of a humming bird visiting my cluster of plants.
